The Cathouse

Become a Foster Parent to a Furry Friend

The CatHouse, a cat rescue team based in Athens, is seeking compassionate individuals or families who are willing to open their hearts and homes to foster cats in need. By becoming a foster parent, you play a crucial role in providing a safe and loving environment for these vulnerable felines while they await their forever homes.

Our foster program aims to rescue cats from the challenging circumstances they face on the streets of Greece. These cats often have limited chances of survival without our intervention. By fostering, you actively contribute to combatting animal suffering and giving these cats a second chance at life.

The process begins with a thorough application to ensure the best possible match between the foster cat and your family. We kindly ask that you provide detailed information about yourself and your household, allowing us to expedite the application and foster process efficiently. This involves completing a questionnaire, undergoing an interview, and conducting a virtual home visit. Once these steps are successfully completed, we proceed to sign a foster agreement and arrange transportation for the cat to the Netherlands.

Rest assured that all cats in our care receive proper vaccinations, microchipping, sterilization or neutering, and have an EU passport. They also undergo a thorough veterinary check-up before leaving Greece. Adoption fees are paid directly to the shelter by the final adopter and are not required as an upfront cost from our foster parents.

The duration of a foster placement can vary, as it depends on when the cat finds its forever home. While some foster cats may only stay with you for a few days, others may require a more extended period of care. This unpredictability is inherent to the fostering process, and we appreciate your flexibility and dedication to providing a temporary haven for these cats in transition.

The CatHouse also actively supports neuter projects in Athens to address the issue of stray animals, further contributing to the well-being of cats in the region.

Join our team of enthusiastic volunteers and make a meaningful impact on the lives of these deserving cats. Together, we can provide them with the love, care, and stability they desperately need. Please consider becoming a foster parent and help us create a brighter future for these precious feline companions.

Do you:
If you rent, have you got written permission from your landlord?
Do you live in:
Do you have a garden, balcony or terrace?
If you live with other people, are they all on board with fostering cats?
Do you own other pets?
How many hours per day are you going to be engaged with the foster cat?
We ask our foster carers to provide for their day to day needs, such as food, water, shelter, exercise, flea and worm treatment, vet check-ups and to be willing to cover any medical expenses yourself. Essentially, you will need to treat the cat as you would your own while they are under your care. Do you agree to these terms?
All our cats are properly vaccinated, chipped, sterilised or neutered (given they are old enough for the surgery) and have an EU passport. They all receive a vet check up before they leave for their foster home and we make sure to keep you fully informed about the vet's feedback. However, as with any animal, we cannot provide 100% guarantee that the cat will always be fully healthy or that it doesn't carry anything in them that the vet doesn't recognize. Are you okay with this?
To ensure a suitable match with a foster, the shelter informs us about their behavior and character and, if requested, does tests such as seeing if the cat gets along with other animals and if they have any specific behaviours to pay attention to. However, as with any animal, we cannot provide 100% guarantee that the cat will have the same reaction and behavior in a new environment and this could take time to adapt. Are you okay with this?
Will you commit to taking photos and/or videos and giving us updates of the foster cat to share with potential adopters once they are settled in?
Are you willing to be involved in the interview/adoption process of the cat's future adopters, including allowing potential adopters to come to your house to meet you and the cat in person?
We are currently looking for a certified driving company to transport rescue dogs and cats from Greece to a foster's home address. Depending on the agreements made, there is a small chance that the foster cat needs to be picked up in another city in the Netherlands/Belgium. We know this isn't ideal and are doing our best to find a solution for them to arrive at the homes of all our foster carers. However, if this is the case, are you willing to travel to pick them up?
Please share how you found out about us. Your answer will help us find more loving homes for all our fur-friends.
Please make sure to carefully read and agree to the following conditions and remember to click the "Submit" button at the end.
